My plan is to sign a lease for office space in a Class A lit building. Then start selling rack space to anybody who wants it at prices that are half that of anybody else offering data center rack space/cage space. Do you think people needing data center space will jump on a deal?

Or will I not get any sales because I'm not running a multi-million dollar operation?

Don't expect to take much money out of the operation for a while though! It does appear that starting a low cost data center is just impossible if customers demand all the various cited infrastructure bits to go along with it.

The "big boys" will always offer a reasonably good product, widespread coverage, and the not-to-be-underestimated security of a name brand.

There are, however, always smaller players with less coverage who offer an arguably better product at a significant better value. To develop a high-quality data center your spending will be in the millions, but not at all at some of the levels thrown about in the industry.
