Volleyball, game played by two teams, usually of six players on a side, in which the players use their hands to bat a ball back and forth over a high net, trying to make the ball touch the court within the opponents’ playing area before it can be returned.
Volleyball, which originated in 1895 in the United States, is just beginning to gain popularity here in the U. Volleyball has a very interesting history since it was originally developed as non-contact recreation for older businessmen, and now it is one of the most popular sports in the world. Morgan invented the game of volleyball in Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1895, which he originally dubbed "Mintonette." He was the Director of Physical Education at the YMCA in Holyoke where he developed exercises and sports classes for male adults.
He decided that he needed a competitive, yet the recreational game with less violence and less intensity than basketball, which was just beginning to develop at the time. Morgan used a tennis net and raised it six and a half feet above the ground for the player to volley over.
He wanted this game to be played and enjoyed even by non-athletes and older adults, rather than be confined to younger athletes who were enjoying basketball at that time.
Volleyball was patterned from the rules of basketball to begin with, and gathered some ideas from other popular games of the time like tennis, baseball, and badminton, where the name “mintonette” was derived from.
